Happiness is a Cool Computer

My son is taking a computer hardware class in school this year, so when our desktop started overheating, we called in our connection. He quickly determined that the power supply fan wasn’t working and told me we had to replace the whole power supply. Turns out the kid knows what he’s talking about. For the cost of a replacement part, my computer is cool again. Even better was my son’s sense of pride at fixing it on his own and being helpful.

Being helpful wasn’t just beneficial to me (and my computer). Turns out it’s also pretty good for my son. According to ActionForHappiness.org, doing things for others is one of the ten keys to happier living. In fact, it’s numero uno. Here’s what Action For Happiness has to say on the subject:

Caring about others is fundamental to our happiness. Helping other people is not only good for them and a great thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier too…so if you want to feel good, do good!

I tell my kids all the time that my job as their parent is to help them be successful, which to me has nothing to do with money or possessions. It’s about being happy, being a good person, and making a positive difference in the world. So, here’s to being happy by being helpful!
