Facebook Home: Welcome or Go Away?

WALL-E

Let’s not do this, people. Hmmm-k?

Last week, the Zuck announced the latest in Facebook‘s efforts to someday live up to its pre-IPO hype: Facebook Home. Home is a group of apps, or a super app, that turns your Android phone into a host organism for Facebook. Depending on whether or not you like Facebook, this could be a parasitic or symbiotic relationship.

Home turns your innocuous home screen into a Facebook feed, called a “Cover Feed”, that displays your friends’ posts as the screen background, saving people from the horror of having to open a specific Facebook app in order to stay up-to-date on the minutia of others’ lives. Now, we can get right to it without the exertion of that pesky extra click. Yes folks, we’re all one step closer to turning into a WALL-E society.

The app also features a mildly alarming feature called Chat Heads that pops up Facebook messages, along with the sender’s profile pic in a little circle, no matter what you’re doing at the time. I like my Facebook friends and all, but I don’t think I really need to know their dinner plans and see their vacation pictures that badly.

Is it just me, or are there other people out there giving Facebook Home a big fat meh?
