An A-musing Muse

This might possibly be the best, most entertaining description of a writer’s muse ever.

The time to try [something new] is when your muse kicks open your office door, stomps across the floor in her combat boots, blows the piece of her feather boa from where it was stuck to the corner of her mouth, grabs your head by the ears and bellows, “There is this girl who has been told her whole life that she is so sickly that if she ever leaves her house she will die—but she has a crush on the gorgeous boy who lives next door and watches him all the time and one night his house catches fire and she goes out her window and into his to save him and…What happens next??? And then she pulls what appears to be a meatball sub from the front pocket of her overalls, bites into it, chews voraciously, belches and walks back out. This is the time.

This is from the “Funny You Should Ask” column (Writer’s Digest, March/April 2014) by Barbara Poelle, who is always humorous with her answers to writers’ questions, but this answer I think is my most favorite.
