Today marks 10 years since I joined my current employer Automattic back in 2013. I suppose it’s fitting that I’m spending the day traveling to a team meetup – a normal part of Automattic life, but one I’ve been missing over the pandemic years. The last time I was at a team meetup was late 2019 so it’s definitely time. 🙂
This is the longest stretch I’ve ever worked for a company before so it’s a little surreal to me, especially when I look back at how much the company has grown and changed over the last decade. When I started, there were fewer than 200 people working here and I knew all of them, at least by name. Now, we have around 2,000 people, spread across many different products and entities. Some days, I miss those early days but overall growth is a good thing and creates new options for learning and developing new career paths.
In many ways, this job has been life-changing. The opportunity to travel widely, meet and work with people from all over the world, and be exposed to such a diversity of ideas, personalities, cultures, etc has been so incredibly enriching and I believe it has fundamentally changed me for the better.
I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had here and I’m looking forward to seeing what the next several years bring!
